Over Martin’s 40-year career in Chartered Accountancy, he has been a partner at Stoy Hayward, BDO and finally Crowe Clark Whitehill. He specialised in providing business, tax and accountancy advice to clients in the property, motor, leisure, training and recruitment industries. Martin has a significant depth and breadth of experience in entrepreneurial owner managed businesses and has been involved in a large number of corporate transactions, typically involving businesses selling out to large corporates or obtaining a public listing. As a Senior Equity Partner, he has been responsible for the running of departments, ranging from 20 to 100 people. During the last 30 years, Martin has acted as an HR partner, closely involved in recruitment and training of new joiners and qualified staff. This involved interviewing graduate and non-graduate applicants to the firm and also participating in open days for the applicants. During this time, Martin has also acted as a nominated ICAEW Counsellor for students, mentoring and supporting them throughout their three year training contract at the firm, leading to achievement of their professional qualification. His role as partner involved assessment of staff and feedback in staff appraisals. Martin particularly enjoyed this aspect of his work since, with guidance and advice about their career prospects, he saw staff develop and progress.
